TikTok is now available again on the Apple and Google app stores in the United States after President Trump assured the tech giants that they wouldn’t face penalties for re listing the app.

The video-sharing app had been removed following a law that came into effect on January 19 right before Trump’s inauguration. This law mandated that the Chinese parent company sell its stake in TikTok or face a potential ban.

Concerns about national security specifically fears that TikTok could be used by Beijing to spy on American users, led to its brief removal. At the time TikTok had millions of American users and the app was briefly unavailable.

However it returned after President Trump signed an executive order to delay the ban, giving TikTok a 75-day window before enforcement would begin.

Despite this both Apple and Google kept TikTok off their platforms for a while.

President Trump has now reassured the companies that they won’t be penalized for offering TikTok for download. Additionally he suggested the 75-day deadline could be extended though he expressed confidence that it wouldn’t be necessary.

TikTok is still working to prove to US authorities that it doesn’t pose a threat to national security. One possible path forward is selling its American operation to a US company.

There are speculations that the app could be valued at about $100 billion if it includes its algorithm in the sale.

In the UK TikTok remains banned from all government phones, even though an official UK government account was launched. This account has been posting public service announcements related to digital driving and other matters.

According to market research firm Sensor Tower TikTok saw more than 52 million downloads in 2024, split nearly evenly between Apple and Google.
