Pete ex-wife Samantha  recently provided a statement to the FBI regarding concerns about her former husband’s alcohol use. This issue has become a point of controversy during his nomination process for Secretary of Defense.

The statement was submitted to the FBI on January 16 following Pete  confirmation hearing according to two sources familiar with the matter. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker and ranking Democrat Jack Reed were briefed about the statement though it had not been previously reported. The FBI incorporated this new statement in its additional review as part of the background check.

Wicker issued a statement refuting reports of the briefing stating that the information provided about the FBI investigation was inaccurate. He reaffirmed his support for  nomination expressing concern that sensitive background check processes were being discussed publicly by anonymous sources.

In response Reed pointed out that multiple briefings on a Defense Secretary nominee had not occurred during his time in the Senate and he confirmed the accuracy of the recent reports regarding the background check content.

Democrats raised concerns during  confirmation hearing about allegations related to sexual misconduct and excessive drinking.  denied the allegations including those regarding alcohol abuse, and assured the committee that he would not drink if confirmed for the position.

The FBI had interviewed Samantha and she stated in her testimony that her ex-husband drank regularly more often than not. Pete and Samantha have been divorced since 2017.

Additionally Pete  former sister-in-law Danielle  submitted an affidavit to the Senate accusing Pete of being abusive toward his ex-wife Samantha. Danielle did not claim to have witnessed physical abuse but mentioned that Samantha had sometimes feared for her safety. Danielle also alleged that Pete drank excessively at family events in 2013.

Pete  lawyer Tim  dismissed the allegations asserting that nothing new had emerged and expressing confidence in the upcoming confirmation vote.

During his hearing acknowledged his imperfections but suggested that the allegations were part of a coordinated smear campaign.

After the release of Danielle affidavit, Democrats raised concerns that this information was not included in the FBI’s original background check briefed to the Senate Armed Services Committee
