The official state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter will take place on January 9 in Washington, D.C., as confirmed by the White House on Monday.

President Joe Biden declared January 9 a National Day of Mourning after Carter’s passing at the age of 100. In his proclamation, Biden praised Carter for his unwavering compassion and moral clarity, noting that Carter’s efforts spanned numerous causes, including disease eradication, peace-building, advancing civil and human rights, promoting free elections, supporting the homeless, and fighting for the underprivileged. “He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe,” Biden said.

Public memorials honoring Carter’s legacy are planned in both Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private burial in Plains, Georgia, his hometown. The Carter Center has stated that final arrangements are still in progress. The Department of Defense’s Joint Task Force-National Capital Region will oversee the ceremonies.

Biden, who took time out from his vacation in St. Croix, delivered an emotional speech about his long-standing friendship with Carter, reflecting on their shared experiences, particularly their battles with cancer. “This is a sad day, but it brings back incredible memories,” Biden said. He went on to describe Carter as a “statesman and humanitarian,” a dear friend to both him and his wife, Jill.

Having known Carter for over five decades, Biden highlighted the former president’s life as one of action rather than words. He pointed out that Carter’s role as a Sunday school teacher in Plains was central to his identity. “To know his core, you need to know he never stopped being a Sunday school teacher,” Biden said.

Biden also spoke about the bond they shared over cancer, a common struggle between their families. He expressed how Carter and his wife Rosalynn had supported the Bidens when their son, Beau, passed away, and how they all found healing together. “Cancer was a common bond between our two families,” Biden said. “We talked and shared our belief that, as a nation, we have the talent and resources to one day end cancer as we know it.”

In his remarks, Biden mentioned that he had spoken with Carter’s children, and his administration was working closely with the Carter family to ensure his legacy would be properly honored.
