Syria’s newly appointed interim Prime Minister, Mohammad Al-Bashir, has urged for peace and stability in the country following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s government. In his first interview since assuming office, he emphasized the importance of national reconciliation and rebuilding efforts.

A New Era Begins

During an interview with Qatar-based Al Jazeera on Tuesday, Al-Bashir expressed hope for Syria’s future, stating, “It’s time for the people of Syria to experience stability and peace.” His appointment came just two days after Assad’s regime fell on November 27 following a 12-day military offensive led by rebel forces.

Rebel Offensive and Government Collapse

The offensive, spearheaded by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), resulted in the capture of Damascus and the subsequent flight of Bashar al-Assad, who is reportedly in Moscow, Russia. The rapid collapse ended Assad’s two-decade-long rule, prompting urgent talks on power transition.

Formation of the Interim Government

Following Assad’s departure, HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani, former Prime Minister Mohammad Al-Jalali, and Al-Bashir held meetings to form a transitional government. The process culminated in Al-Bashir’s appointment, with his term set to last until March 1, 2025.

Justice and Accountability Promised

Al-Julani pledged to hold senior officials of the previous government accountable for alleged war crimes and human rights violations. In a statement to Sky News, he assured that Syria’s new leadership is committed to ending the cycle of war and rebuilding the nation.

Rebuilding and Moving Forward

“We are tired of war,” said Al-Julani. “Syria will no longer return to conflict. We will focus on development and reconstruction.” He underscored that restoring stability is Syria’s top priority as it moves toward a peaceful and prosperous future.
