Photos have emerged showing the damage sustained by the USS Harry S. Truman, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier following a collision with a merchant ship last week. The incident occurred near the Suez Canal and the warship docked at a naval facility in Bay Greece for repairs over the weekend.
Images released by the Navy on Saturday reveal damage to the starboard quarter of the 1,100 foot long, nuclear powered aircraft carrier. Affected areas include the exterior walls of storage rooms a maintenance space a line handling space the fantail and the platform above one of the storage areas. Despite the damage, the Navy confirmed that the ship’s combat capabilities remain unaffected and it has continued flight operations since the accident on Wednesday night.
A team of engineers and naval architects is currently assessing the damage and will create a repair plan though no timeline for the repairs has been provided.
The USS Harry S. Truman collided with the Besiktas M a Panamanian flagged bulk carrier, in the Mediterranean Sea near Egypt’s Port Said. While both vessels were damaged no injuries were reported. The collision took place in a busy waterway near the Suez Canal where maneuvering room is limited which can heighten the risk of accidents.
Prior to the collision the USS Harry S. Truman had been conducting operations in the Central Command region including airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen and ISIS forces in Somalia. Rear Adm. Sean Bailey commander of the ship’s strike group confirmed that the mission remains unchanged and the carrier remains operational despite the incident.
