Speaker Mike Johnson has stated that the House GOP budget resolution will pass out of the Budget Committee today without any Republican defections despite protests from some hardline members.
I expect it to pass unanimously Johnson told reporters as he entered the Capitol on Thursday.
After several weeks of delays the Budget panel is meeting this morning to discuss and vote on a budget resolution necessary to move forward with the massive Trump agenda bill they aim to pass this year along party lines.
Fiscal conservatives such as Representatives Chip Roy (Texas) Ralph Norman (South Carolina) and others on the panel have called for deeper spending cuts guarantees for work requirements in safety net program and other amendments which they plan to raise during today’s Budget meeting.
These Republicans plan to introduce an additional amendment today that they have negotiated with GOP leaders. This proposal would strengthen a provision in the budget resolution that would reduce the available funding for tax cuts if Republicans do not meet the $2 trillion spending cut target. GOP leaders expect this amendment to pass Majority Leader Steve Scalise told reporters on Thursday.
This is the necessary first step to get it going Johnson said this morning.
