Google announced on Tuesday that it plans to update the names of two major geographical landmarks in accordance with an executive order from President Donald Trump.

The tech company said in a post that it will change the name of Alaska’s Denali Mountain back to Mount McKinley and rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

Google explained We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they are updated in official government sources and further clarified its approach.

The company added that it uses the U.S. Geological Survey’s Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) to determine official names.

In cases where official names differ between countries Maps users will see the local official name. Users in other countries will see both names Google stated.

This announcement follows the signing of an executive order by President Trump on Inauguration Day which directed the restoration of Mount McKinley’s name and a renaming of the Gulf of Mexico.

During his inauguration address Trump said Soon we are going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and we will restore the name of a great president William McKinley to Mount McKinley where it should be. President McKinley enriched our country through tariffs and talent.

The decision has faced some opposition, even from within Trump’s own party. Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski expressed strong disagreement with the move in a post on January 20.

Our nation’s tallest mountain, known as Denali for thousands of years must continue to be recognized by the rightful name given by Alaska’s Athabascans who have cared for this land since time immemorial Murkowski said.
