Former President of South Korea Yoon Suk has been accused of rebellion after declaring martial law a claim made by prosecutors. This is the first time in the country’s history that a sitting president faces such serious charges.

On December 3 2025 Yoon imposed martial law in South Korea. However due to widespread protests and resistance he was forced to revoke the law just six hours later. Following these events on December 14 the South Korean parliament moved to impeach him temporarily removing him from office.

The situation became more complicated when investigators attempted to arrest Yoon at his residence. However members of the Presidential Security Service (PSS) obstructed their efforts. After a second attempt Yoon was eventually arrested. Yoon, however maintains his innocence claiming that he did not commit any wrongdoing.

If found guilty Yoon could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty. However no death sentences have been carried out in South Korea for several decades.

This incident marks a significant moment in South Korea’s political history as it is the first time a sitting president has been accused of such serious charges involving martial law.
