Populist leaders like Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Hungarian President Viktor were among those who celebrated Trump’s return. Modi called Trump a dear friend while suggested the new administration’s policies would benefit countries like Hungary.
However not all leaders offered congratulations. Some took issue with Trump’s inaugural speech and the executive actions he signed upon assuming office. Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino rejected Trump’s claim that the US would take back control of the Panama Canal stating that the canal remains under Panama’s control. Cuban officials condemned Trump’s decision to reinstate Cuba on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism calling it an arrogant and unjustified move.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau despite previous tensions with Trump extended congratulations and emphasized the importance of working together while protecting Canada’s interests.
In the Middle East and Ukraine, leaders responded to Trump’s previous campaign promises with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressing optimism for future cooperation and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky voicing hope that Trump’s policies would help achieve peace. Russian President Vladimir Putin also welcomed the possibility of renewed dialogue with the US under Trump.
In Asia leaders such as Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru and Taiwan’s President Lai Ching expressed their commitment to continued partnership with the US particularly in countering China’s growing influence in the region. European leaders including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and UK Prime Minister Keir reaffirmed the importance of transatlantic cooperation.
Middle Eastern leaders including Syria’s Ahmed al- and Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to the US Reema Bandar Al-Saud also extended their congratulations looking forward to stronger relations under Trump’s leadership.
