The F.B.I. field office in New York confirmed receiving a tip from San Francisco police identifying Luigi Mangione as a suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The tip was passed to the New York Police Department (NYPD), though the exact timing of the information transfer remains unclear.
Mangione, whose family reported him missing weeks before the December 4 incident, was not initially on the NYPD’s radar. He was captured on December 11 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized by a McDonald’s customer.
Surveillance footage revealed Mangione’s escape route after the shooting near the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. He fled on a bicycle, abandoned it on the Upper West Side, and later took the subway to Pennsylvania Station.
Upon arrest, Mangione was found with a handgun, ammunition, fake IDs, and a handwritten manifesto seemingly confessing to the crime. He faces charges of second-degree murder in New York, along with gun and forgery charges in Pennsylvania. His next court hearings are scheduled for December 23 and December 30.
Authorities continue to investigate Mangione’s movements and are searching for the bicycle he used during his escape.
